What is PayPal?
PayPal is the most widely used online payment method for securing transactions, acting as a payment intermediary throughout all stages of your online shopping for products or services. PayPal is owned by eBay Inc., the world’s largest online auction company, managed in Europe from Luxembourg by PayPal Europe. PayPal operates in 190 countries with 113 million active customers and supports 25 currencies. In 2011, total PayPal transaction volume reached $118 billion.
How does PayPal work?
PayPal functions as a virtual online account, acting as an intermediary between you and the e-commerce service provider. Your PayPal account is funded only when you choose to do so, using a credit, debit, or prepaid card, or your bank account. To use PayPal for a transaction, you simply need your PayPal account credentials—an email address and password. From there, PayPal completes the payment process by sending the required funds without revealing sensitive information (names, credit card details, etc.), as if PayPal itself were making the payment.
PayPal and Security
PayPal operates with the highest internet security standards. Every PayPal transaction takes place in a secure environment using SSL protocol connections and a high-performance AES-256-bit encryption system. All PayPal pages—from registration and login interfaces to simple service messages—use secure, encrypted connections between your browser and PayPal servers, making real-time data theft virtually impossible.
PayPal monitors every transaction from start to finish, and in the rare event of an issue, users can contact PayPal specialists for support, dispute a charge, or request a refund.
Advantages of PayPal
Compared to most payment methods, PayPal stands out for the following reasons:
-
Credit card and banking information is securely stored on PayPal servers and is never disclosed during transactions.
-
Sellers receive payment from PayPal without accessing your personal or banking details.
-
All PayPal pages are strongly encrypted, eliminating the risk of data theft.
-
PayPal continuously evaluates its service level for merchants, increasing its credibility.
-
Using PayPal eliminates the need to repeatedly enter credit card or banking information—simply log in and click PAY.
-
PayPal’s support department is always available to protect users from fraud and unauthorized charges, and to assist with disputes or refunds.
Registering with PayPal
You can register with PayPal easily using your email address as your primary identifier and a secure password of your choice. After confirming your registration, you must enter your credit, debit, or prepaid card information, or banking details, so PayPal can process transfers to and from your account.
PayPal will always keep you informed by email about the status and completion of each transaction, as well as any suspicious activity related to your account’s security. Your personal and banking information is securely stored on PayPal servers, and only you can modify or delete it.
Payment Methods
PayPal processes payments and transactions on your behalf. Funds transferred to your PayPal account can be managed using the following methods:
-
Linked credit card: For each purchase made with PayPal, your credit card is charged without revealing your banking information to the seller.
-
Linked debit card: Similar to a credit card, PayPal charges your debit card, which then withdraws funds from your bank account. If your account balance is insufficient, the transaction will not be completed.
-
Linked prepaid card: Funds are deducted from the prepaid card balance, which you can reload at any time. Prepaid cards are available at all banking institutions.
-
Bank transfer: You may transfer funds from your bank account to your PayPal account using PayPal’s transfer process. Your PayPal account must have sufficient balance for a transaction to be completed. Bank transfers are not recommended due to longer processing times (5–7 days).
PayPal Service Fees
The ability to transfer money quickly and securely, along with PayPal’s global network, makes PayPal services reasonably priced. Fees charged by PayPal range from free to a small percentage per transaction, depending on the account type and country.
